The Art Behind the Design

Every Dragonflies is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The garden scene extends from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous composition so the flowers and foliage spill naturally to the edges. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The white distressed finish gives the Dragonflies a soft, sun-washed quality that feels perfectly at home with the gentle blues, greens, and yellows of the garden scene. Applied by hand in our Michigan studio, the worn edges reveal warm wood beneath — a natural warmth that complements the peaceful design without competing with it.
