The Art Behind the Design

Every Iris is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The iris blooms extend from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one bold, continuous composition so the deep purples and greens reach naturally to the edges. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The white distressed finish gives the Iris a clean, bright backdrop that allows the deep purple blooms to take center stage with maximum impact.
