The Art Behind the Design

Every Bird of Paradise is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The Bird of Paradise bloom extends from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous composition, so the tropical colors don’t stop at the edge. Neither does the impact. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The black distressed finish is applied by hand in our Michigan studio — a deliberate process that wears the edges down to reveal the warm wood beneath, giving each frame its own weathered character. Against the vivid tropical colors of the Bird of Paradise design, the dark frame creates a dramatic contrast that makes every color pop.
