The Art Behind the Design

Every Bistro is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The Parisian scene extends from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous composition, so the café spills right to the edges. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The weathered gray finish gives the Bistro a soft, European quality — like a café table that has sat outside through a dozen Parisian summers. Applied by hand in our Michigan studio, each frame has its own subtle variation in tone and texture.
