The Art Behind the Design

Every Sunflowers is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The sunflower design extends from screen onto frame — painted as one continuous golden panorama. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The walnut stained finish gives the Sunflowers Studio its most distinctive quality — because this is a stain rather than a paint, the natural pine grain shows through completely. The warm honey tones of the walnut stain and the golden yellows of the sunflowers feel completely made for each other. No two walnut frames ever look quite alike. The Studio Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
