The Art Behind the Design

Every Studio Series Gallery of Cats  is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. Each cat portrait is rendered with its own personality and expression — curious, skeptical, wide-eyed, and thoroughly unimpressed in equal measure. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point. Much like cats themselves.

The Frame

The black distressed finish is applied by hand in our Michigan studio — wearing edges down to reveal warm wood beneath. Against the colorful parade of cat portraits the dark frame creates bold gallery-worthy contrast. The Studio Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
