The Art Behind the Design

Every Portrait Series Aida is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The black distressed finish is applied by hand in our Michigan studio — a deliberate process that wears the edges down to reveal the warm wood beneath, giving each frame its own weathered character. The Portrait Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference the moment you hold it. It’s the kind of finish that looks like it has a history, even when it’s brand new.
