The Art Behind the Design

Every Bamboo Studio is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. The bamboo design extends from screen onto the solid wood frame — painted as one continuous tropical composition. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The walnut stained finish is warm, rich, and natural — and because this is a stain rather than a paint, the natural pine grain shows through completely, giving every single frame its own unique character. No two walnut frames ever look quite alike. The Studio Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
