The Art Behind the Design

Every Bird of Paradise is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. The tropical design extends from screen onto frame — painted as one continuous bold composition. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The black distressed finish is applied by hand in our Michigan studio — wearing edges down to reveal warm wood beneath. Against the vivid tropical colors the dark frame creates a dramatic contrast that makes every color pop. The Portrait Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
