The Art Behind the Design

Every Bamboo Portrait is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The walnut stained finish is warm, rich, and natural — and because this is a stain rather than a paint, the natural pine grain shows through completely, giving every single frame its own unique character. No two walnut frames ever look quite alike. The Portrait Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference the moment you hold it.
