The Art Behind the Design

Every Portrait Series Sandpipers is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The coastal scene extends from screen onto frame — painted as one continuous shoreline composition. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The white distressed finish gives the Portrait Series Sandpipers a sun-bleached salt-aired quality — like driftwood weathered by years on a favorite beach. Applied by hand, worn edges reveal warm wood beneath — grounding the cool coastal blues perfectly. The Portrait Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
