The Art Behind the Design

Every Beach Umbrella is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The coastal scene extends from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous composition, so the beach doesn’t stop at the edge. Neither does the feeling. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The white distressed finish is applied by hand in our Michigan studio — a deliberate process that wears the edges down to reveal the warm wood beneath, giving each frame a soft, sun-bleached quality.
