The Art Behind the Design

Every Classic Heart Tree is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The heart tree motif is one of Barb’s most beloved designs — a bare silhouette tree whose branches curl and bloom into layered red hearts, scattered with small black polka dots that give it that unmistakable folk art rhythm. Painted entirely freehand, no two pieces flow in exactly the same way. No two are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The black distressed frame is finished by hand in our Michigan studio, with warm copper tones worn through at the edges — the kind of finish that looks like it came down through generations rather than off a shelf. It grounds the boldness of the red hearts beautifully, giving the whole piece that classic American folk art character that feels both rustic and refined.
