The Art Behind the Design

Every Gallery of Cats is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

Each cat portrait is rendered with its own personality and expression — curious, skeptical, wide-eyed, and thoroughly unimpressed in equal measure. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point. Much like cats themselves.

The Frame

The black distressed finish is applied by hand in our Michigan studio — a deliberate process that wears the edges down to reveal the warm wood beneath, giving each frame its own weathered character. Against the colorful parade of cat portraits, the dark frame creates a bold, gallery-worthy contrast that makes every whisker pop. It’s the kind of finish that looks like it has a history, even when it’s brand new.
