The Art Behind the Design

Every Lavender is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The lavender stalks extend from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous field so the purple blooms reach naturally to the edges. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The weathered gray finish gives the Lavender its most harmonious quality — the cool gray of the frame and the soft purple of the lavender feel made for each other, creating a composition that is perfectly balanced and completely restful to look at.
