The Art Behind the Design

Every Mushrooms is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The toadstool and vine design extends from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous enchanted scene so the trailing vines reach naturally into the corners and beyond. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The white distressed finish gives the Mushrooms a soft, storybook quality — like a fairy tale illustration that has been lovingly framed and hung on a cottage wall.
