The Art Behind the Design

Every Sunflowers is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. What begins as a blank screen becomes something you’ll want to look at every single day.

The sunflower design extends from the screen onto the solid wood frame itself — painted as one continuous golden composition so the blooms reach naturally to the edges. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The walnut stained finish gives the Sunflowers its most distinctive quality — because this is a stain rather than a paint, the natural pine grain shows through completely, giving every single frame its own unique pattern of wood character.
