The Art Behind the Design

Every Beach Umbrella Portrait is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. No two pieces are ever quite identical. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

The white distressed finish gives the Beach Umbrella Portrait a sun-bleached, coastal quality — like driftwood weathered by salt air and warm sun. Applied by hand in our Michigan studio, the worn edges reveal warm wood beneath. The Portrait Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series — you’ll feel the difference immediately.
