Slender birch trunks rise through a soft wash of greens, purples, and blues painted entirely by hand across the fiberglass screen, the face of the frame, and even the sides — so the art wraps completely around the piece. Displayed vertically at 10″ x 14″ on your wall, it has a presence that is genuinely extraordinary.

The Art Behind the Design

Every Portrait Series Birch Trees is painted entirely by hand in our Michigan studio by artist Barbara Downey, using a process she has refined over nearly 30 years. The technique is entirely our own — part American folk art tradition, part closely guarded studio secret. The Birch Trees is one of our most painterly designs — and no two pieces are ever quite identical in color or character. That’s not a flaw — that’s the point.

The Frame

Unlike our standard finishes, the Birch Trees frame is painted freehand in a free-form wash of greens, purples, and blues — covering the face and sides of the frame completely. The Portrait Series uses more substantial wood than our Classic Series, giving this wraparound painting an even more impressive canvas to work with.
